Filmmaker Spike Lee’s new theatrical movie, Chi-Raq, focuses on gun violence on the streets of Chicago. The story is an adaptation of Lysistrada, a play written 2400 years ago by the Greek playwright, Aristophanes. The play was a comedy about the efforts of one heroic woman to rally the women of her city to refuse sex for their men until they ended their warring ways.
Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq takes the plot of Lysistrada and sets it in modern Chicago around the murderous violence of the city’s low-income housing projects. What is clear from the original play by Aristophanes, and from Spike Lee’s adaptation, is that the sexual power of women is real power. We can think of lots of ways to channel that power , not just for women, but for the world we all share.
