The next battle on tap for the LGBT community is a legal framework for outlawing discrimination against gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender Americans. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon is a co-sponsor of the bill in the senate. A companion bill has been introduced in the House. Sad to say, this effort in the current congress to deal with this issue is unlikely to get very far, given the hostility to all things LGBT in the current majority conservative Republican party. The 2016 election is on 15 months away. This issue needs to be a priority.
The most important thing about today’s latest Democratic LGBT initiative is its value as a rallying point. No question, the outlawing of discrimination is the next big battle looming for the LGBT community.
We totally support this latest Congressional effort to right this wrong, though we believe we would be best served if it was done as an ‘Equal Rights’ Constitutional Amendment that would assure that all Americans would share the same rights, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, or creed.
