Despite its burgeoning prosperity, India continues to be a nation shaped culturally on a rigid caste system. Those born as Dalits, or ‘untouchables’ account for more the 16% of the Indian population. Even now in 2015, the caste system remains unyielding.
India has the largest population on Earth – over 1. 3 billion, adding 12 million more every year. India is nominally a democracy, and has enjoyed substantial economic growth over the last two decades. However this good news does not apply to Dalits. Birth into the ‘untouchable’ caste dooms a person to a life of hardship and discrimination. This is particularly true for Dalit women.
